A personal introduction

My name is Sam Knutsen and I am the founder of Givingtree Woodshop. I grew up building things with my paternal grandfather in his garage and he taught me the joy of creating with my hands. I have found that when I am restless or anxious I need to find a way to get my hands dirty and create something. From a young age I have always enjoyed creating and building.

When my grandfather passed away I was lucky enough to inherit all his tools. It is something special to be able to use some of the same tools that he used for many years. When I was a kid my grandpa built many things for our family. He could build and refinish furniture, make jewelry and build boats. I spent countless hours working alongside him. When my wife was pregnant with our youngest I decided I was going to build him a crib. That was my first piece of fine furniture I have built. I had built plenty of garage shelves, skateboard ramps, patio tables, and done rough construction, but that was my first piece of fine furniture. It took me months and there are plenty of things I learned and would do differently now, but I am so proud of how it turned out and hope that one day my grandkids may use it. The idea that furniture can lasts generations is something that I really love. To think that a piece of furniture I make may live on far past me is a really powerful thought.

I would love to build something that becomes part of your family story. If you have a custom piece of furniture in mind please reach out. I love working with people to design and build something that fits them and their story.
